Clean Machine Program
Particle filter installed on a City of Sydney chipper (reproduced with permission from the City of Sydney)
From 2011 to December 2014, the EPA ran the Clean Machine Program, which supported diesel emissions reductions from equipment, such as cranes, loaders, graders, dump trucks and tractors, used mainly in ports, quarries, waste facilities and construction. The program
- encouraged purchase of lower emitting equipment
- promoted better worksite practices
- subsidised the retrofitting of heavily polluting machines with partial diesel particle filters
Results
- More than 40 organisations in the Greater Metropolitan Region, including private businesses and local councils, participated in the program.
- The NSW Government provided almost $806,000 in subsidies to retrofit 141 diesel machines.
- It is estimated that these retrofits will reduce diesel particle emissions by about 37 tonnes over 10 years to 2024, yielding substantial public health benefits.
Some Clean Machine Program partners have voluntarily adopted policies to
- only procure lower emitting diesel equipment and select contractors who use best practice measures
- adopt best practice measures to reduce emissions from worksites
- develop case studies demonstrating best practice measures other organisations can use to reduce diesel exhaust emissions
