For local government

The EPA works closely with local government as partners and co-regulators towards environmental protection.

Working with local government, we aim to build capacity and support, to drive better environmental outcomes and pollution prevention. Working alongside councils is critical to driving momentum and engagement at the local level.

As Appropriate Regulatory Authorities under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act) councils share regulatory responsibility for a number of environmental issues, under this key environmental protection legislation. You can find more information in the Powers and notices guideline.

We also sometimes regulate local council activities under environmental protection legislation, as we do with industry and other licensees.
