Illegal dumping and the rollout of the NSW Government’s Return and Earn container deposit scheme were just some of the key issues discussed at the LGNSW Annual Conference 2017 held in Sydney earlier this month.

Bringing together more than 50 exhibitors, the annual conference provides an essential forum for councillors, council staff and other delegates from across the state to come together, share ideas and shape the agenda for local government policy and decision-making.
EPA’s Waste and Resource Recovery Branch Executive Director Sarah Gardner said local government is a major partner of the EPA.
“Our officers work closely with councils right across NSW to develop and deliver a host of waste initiatives designed to reduce litter, reduce incidents of illegal dumping, and increase rates of recycling and resource recovery in our state.
“The conference provides a valuable opportunity for EPA staff to network with councils and hear directly how EPA funded programs like Love Food Hate Waste, the Regional Illegal Dumping Squads and the Return and Earn container deposit scheme are working to support and protect local communities and the environment,” Mrs Gardner said.
Conference delegates were addressed by Acting Premier of NSW John Barilaro and Minister for Local Government and Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton. Also on the program was a presentation from Walkley Award winning journalist Annabel Crabb.
