First climate change survey
Earlier this year, we released our Climate Change Policy and Action Plan 2023 - 26 with the first step being to better understand industry practices.
The plan outlines a detailed regulatory approach and set of actions to address the causes and consequences of climate change in NSW.
Our Action Plan demonstrates our commitment to working closely with industry and other stakeholders to ensure our regulatory approaches are meaningful, feasible and cost-effective.
Next Steps: Understanding licensee sustainability initiatives
To inform our work, we need to better understand the actions our Protection of the Environment Operations (POEO) licensees are implementing or planning to help combat climate change.
That’s why we’re requiring licensees to let us know what actions they are already taking and where more support is needed.
Thank you to all the licensees who have completed the survey. The closing date to complete the survey was extended until 15 September 2023, however, we are continuing to help our licensees in submitting their responses over the following days.
The EPA’s environment protection licensees play a critical role in helping NSW decarbonise and build resilience to a changing climate. Our approach to climate change centres around working together with our regulated community as we transition to a low carbon economy.
We know industry and the community are already taking major strides towards a cleaner future. This survey will help us better understand and establish base-line information.
By establishing this baseline, we can focus our efforts on developing fit-for-purpose regulatory approaches to address greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks that are meaningful, feasible and cost-effective for the different industries we regulate.
Through this process, we also hope to identify opportunities for further research and development. We want to understand where additional support or behaviour change programs might be needed to assist our licensees to further decarbonise and increase resilience.
The work supports and builds on climate change policies and initiatives of the NSW Government, helping industry to decarbonise and build greater preparedness and resilience to climate change risks.
