Lets scrap together to recycle food waste
Our new Scrap Together campaign is coming to a council near you with the roll out of $10,000 grants to councils with a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service to deliver it.
Recycled food waste will provide quality compost for growing more food
The four-part education campaign takes a light-hearted approach to help households make the most of their service to recycle more food waste into quality compost.
Forty-three councils in NSW now provide a FOGO service to their residents, so food waste can be recycled alongside garden waste in their green lid bins.
“The Scrap Together campaign takes food waste recycling to the next level,” EPA Organics Manager Amanda Kane said.
“A trial of the Scrap Together campaign in three council areas was a great success. After learning all food scraps can be composted, residents put more food in the FOGO bin rather than the red bin.
“It follows research that shows people really like the service, but some residents weren’t sure what they could put into the green lid bin and what happens once it was collected.
“They also learnt how the resulting compost is also great for the environment because it’s used to improve soil quality on local farms.”
The Scrap Together campaign explains what to do, how to keep out contaminants and keep caddies and bins fresh. It was tested in three FOGO Council areas over three months and resulted in 10% more food being recovered in the green lid bin and less contamination. NSW Government mandate for FOGO
- The Scrap Together campaign roll out paves the way for state-wide FOGO, following the release of the NSW government’s new Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy.
- The Strategy introduces new requirements for councils to provide food and garden waste collections to all NSW households by 2030 and for large food waste generating businesses to source separate food waste by 2025.
- An additional $69 million funding has been allocated to 2027 to support the transition.
