Why compost is cool
Because the EPA has created Cool Compost – a one-stop online resource centre for all things compost.
Cool Compost showcases the benefits of the nutrient-rich organic material for five target audiences – graziers, vegetable growers, landscapers, councils and government agencies. It follows the success of the EPA’s $7.5 million Organics Market Development Program which funded 38 innovative projects that showed just how practical and versatile compost could be (even including for football fields!).
Compost has lots of things going for it: it’s great for boosting biological activity, it improves the health and growth of plants, and it increases water efficiency by improving the soil’s ability to retain water. When compost comes from food and organics waste it’s a perfect example of a circular economy in action, as it returns nutrient-rich resources back to the land and regenerates our environment.
And for businesses and government agencies that want to reduce their waste and carbon footprint and meet sustainability targets, compost is a very affordable way of doing it. Any organisation interested in healthy soil can benefit from this growing market (pun intended).
In 2024 the EPA once again sponsored International Compost Awareness Week Australia. Our strong presence at the May event is testimony to our recognition of how awesome and cool compost can be.
